Home & Garden: Christmas OrnamentsTiki

Get out your crafting leftovers! These ornaments are cheap and easy to make, and can be embellished however you'd like with whatever supplies you have on hand. They look hip hanging on a Christmas tree, but they also make nice gift tags or package decorations.

Supplies:

  • Downloadable pattern
  • White glue
  • Glue stick
  • Hot melt glue (optional)
  • Thin cardboard
  • Hole punch
  • Craft knife ("Xacto knife")
  • Ribbon or yarn for hanging
  • Embellishments

The sky is the limit as far as embellishments go; you can pretty much use whatever you have on hand, including:

  • Acrylic craft paint
  • Fabric paint - the squeeze tubes are great for making outlines, and glow-in-the-dark paint adds an unexpected touch
  • Glitter
  • Beads
  • Yarn
  • Fabric
  • Sequins

Making the ornaments

  1. Print out pattern.
  2. Temporarily stick the pattern to cardboard by daubing it with a glue stick.
  3. With a craft knife, carefully cut along outlines for shapes.
  4. With hole punch, make a hole at the top of each cardboard piece for hanging.
  5. Peel off the pattern paper
  6. Embellish as desired

Examples:

Guitar pick

Both sides of the cardboard were painted with acrylic craft paint.

The eyebrows, nose, eye area and mouth were outlined with glow-in-the-dark pink fabric paint.

A strand of fuzzy yarn was glued to the top edge for "hair".

White glue was spread over the cardboard shape, then striped fabric was smoothed over it. After the glue dried, the reverse side was covered with fabric as well.

The fabric was trimmed flush with the edge, then fuzzy yarn was glued around the edge.

Star

Fabric was glued on each side of the star shape, then trimmed at the edges.

Individual sequins were glued around the edge with hot melt glue. The latter was very tedious and isn't recommended if you have a large number of ornaments to make and wish to preserve your sanity. In that case, sequin trim would be a better option.

Animal print fabric was glued on each side of the cardboard shape and trimmed after drying. Shading was added with Tsukineko inks and a Fantastix (foam applicator). A fabric marker would work equally well.

This bowling ball shape would also look good with swirls of differently-colored or sparkly paint, in imitation of a real bowling ball.
