Food: Chocolate-Covered Raisins

Chocolate covered raisinsHave you ever tried making chocolate raisins at home? It's extremely simple, yet it's something many wouldn't think of trying. For so little effort, though, one gets a large return.

One person who didn't care for chocolate raisins tried them and said they were an "epiphany". Because of time spent on the shelf and the quality of ingredients, commercially made candy often suffers in comparison with that you make yourself. Homemade chocolate-covered raisins are more tender and flavorful than those bought at the store, and disappear almost as quickly as they are made.

This is a great rainy day "cooking" project for little kids, provided that one is careful about the heated chocolate, which can burn them. It's quick, has very few steps, and is a good introduction to procedures like measuring and stirring.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup good-quality milk chocolate chips (We like Guittard or Ghirardelli)
  • 1/4 cup raisins, or one 1 1/2 ounce individually-sized box

Coating the raisins

  1. Line a small plate with waxed paper. This doesn't have to be pretty or done too precisely; it's just to keep the raisins from sticking to the plate.
  2. Place chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in microwave one minute or until melted.
  3. Stir chocolate until it's smooth, then stir in the raisins.
  4. Drop coated raisins on the waxed paper, trying to separate them into several lumps. (That is, unless you simply want a giant mass of chocolatey-raisiny goodness.)
  5. Chill in freezer until set, approximately 15 minutes.
  6. Peel coated raisins off waxed paper and serve.
