A reader who wishes to be identified as SwampWitch has written to express concern over plastics which aren't specified as food-safe being used to serve the Litterbox Cake. This is certainly the sort of thing that is very easy to avoid, so if you have concerns after reading her letter, you can simply line the garbage bag with plastic wrap and substitute a standard serving utensil for the cat litter scoop.
I've edited SwampWitch's list of URLs below to include organization and article names.
"If you store, prepare, or serve food on plastics not meant for food, you should be aware that some very nasty chemicals will be absorbed into the food, and if ingested, can cause serious long-term health problems.
This includes contact paper, litter boxes and scoops, film containers, trash cans, trash bags, litter box liners, paint buckets, vinyl tableclothes, etc. These are NON-FOOD-grade which means manufacturers can use poisons in these plastic products, since they are not intended to come into direct contact with foods!
If you must use one of the above containers, line it with food-grade plastic or foil.
Please get informed for health... here are some links:

Here's a link about the vinyl lining in lunchboxes (recalled in case food touches the lining!):
